Generational legacy: Passing down Día de los Muertos traditions amid fear and loss

An Día de los Muertos altar for the memory of those who died at the hands of ICE and Customs and Border Protection agents rest at the picnic shelter Sunday at Kiwanis Methow Park.

The kitchen smells of cinnamon and piloncillo as Veronica Zamora stirs a pot of ponche. She hasn’t folded any flores de cartulina this year, but memories of childhood afternoons spent with her mother and grandmother linger.

At 51, Zamora celebrates the Day of the Dead not just to honor those who have passed away in her life, but to keep alive the rituals and stories that shaped her, hoping one day her children and grandchildren will feel the same connection.
