WENATCHEE — The Ninth Annual Andrew York Lineman Rodeo fundraiser happens from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday at Walla Walla Point Park, where some 20 line crews and 29 apprentices from about a dozen utilities will compete for trophies and bragging rights.

Named for a Chelan County PUD lineman hit by a drunken driver while on duty, the event doubles as a scholarship fundraiser for high school students whose volunteer efforts include prevention of drug and alcohol abuse.

The event has awarded $27,000 in scholarship money since 2006, including the $3,000 won by this year’s winner, Wenatchee High School grad Hannah Cain, 18.

Teams from all four of North Central Washington’s PUDs will square off against teams from across the region and country, including the second appearance of a team from Duquesne Light Company, the Pittsburgh utility now managed by Rich Riazzi, former Chelan PUD general manager.

This year’s event will feature an electrical safety demonstration at noon by Okanogan County PUD crews, along with the usual raffle, children’s games, and a spectator pole climb.
