MALOTT — A 64-year-old Malott woman was stabbed to death Monday and her son was arrested on suspicion of murder.
Authorities received a report at 2:44 p.m. that Juana Ferreria Demejia was stabbed at her home in the area of Old Highway 97 and Central Street in Malott, the Okanogan County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.
She died at the scene.
Deputies arrived on scene seven minutes later and began searching for a suspect. Bystanders helped deputies locate 34-year-old José Mejia, the release said.
Mejia fled into the nearby Okanogan River where he was arrested by two deputies shortly after 3 p.m. While in the river, Mejia resisted arrest and attempted to take a firearm from a deputy, the release said.
Mejia was transported to Mid Valley Hospital in Omak for an injury to his hand and then booked into Okanogan County Jail on suspicion of second-degree murder, possession of a dangerous weapon, third-degree assault and resisting arrest.
Mejia and his mother lived together at the home, said Sheriff Tony Hawley. The Washington State Crime Lab is assisting local detectives in collecting evidence at the scene.
