CHEHALIS — On Tuesday and Wednesday, the Riverside Golf Club hosted the 2023 1A State Golf Championship and while many golfers from the Caribou Trail League qualified for the state tournament, one Chelan golfer proved he was better than the rest.
Carson Clinton, only a freshman at Chelan High School and CTL Player of the Year, became a state champion on Wednesday, beating his closest competitor by two strokes. He scored a 74 in Round 1 and a 70 in Round 2.
Josaya Sloan shot a 90, Grizz Moore scored a 98 and Jovan Mercado shot a 104 — all from Omak — in the first round of the tournament but missed the cut for Round 2.
For the girls, Omak’s Halle Richter earned a high 6th-place finish after shooting a 93 in Round 1 and a 91 in Round 2. Her teammate, Kinsey Christoph, placed 18th. She scored 103 in Round 1 and 114 in Round 2.
Arabelle Finch (Chelan), the CTL Player of the Year, scored a 110 in the first round but missed the cut by two strokes, tying for a 24th-place finish. Two others competed in the first round and also missed the cut. Kira Sandoval (Chelan) shot a 114 and Coley Christoph (Omak) scored a 119.
