COWICHE — Saturday morning began the 1A state quarterfinal match for the Cascade and Highland high school soccer teams. The field was still fresh in Cascade’s memory after beating King’s Way Christian the day before in a four-goal shutout. The Scotties would prove to be a more difficult opponent.

The tournament had finally condensed down the top eight teams in the state. The Kodiaks (12-5) won their last four games and Highland (20-2) won six. The Kodiaks were second in the Caribou Trail League and District 6 champions. The Scotties won their league — the Eastern Washington Athletic Conference (West) — and their District 5 championships.
