CASHMERE — The Cashmere High School baseball team hosted Medical Lake for a Caribou Trail League/Northeast 1A League loser-out crossover game Saturday afternoon and with a state berth on the line, the Bulldogs clinched the game in the fifth inning with a couple of clutch at-bats, beating Medical Lake, 4-1, for their eighth consecutive win.
Cashmere (17-5) and Medical Lake (10-13) kept it close until the fifth inning when Tom McDevitt connected on the game's biggest at-bat, earning a triple after the ball sailed over an outfielder, breaking the 1-1 tie for the Bulldog lead, 3-1. Trever Shoults was next to the plate and singled, driving in McDevitt for the insurance run, 4-1.
Jack Croci pitched the first five innings and only gave up four hits, one run, and two walks and finished with seven strikeouts. Jack Niederstadt relieved the last two innings and only gave up one walk.
McDevitt led Cashmere with two RBIs and a stolen base and went 3-for-3. Croci went 1-for-3, Grady Zimmerman went 1-for-3 and Niederstadt was 1-for-1.
Cashmere plays Cedar Park Christian (Bothell) at Camas High School in the state tournament opening round on Saturday at 10 a.m.
