QUINCY — The Chelan High School soccer team cobbled together a three-game winning streak to reach the opening round of the 1A state tournament — their first appearance in 10 years. They met the Connell Eagles — who finished third in the South Central Athletic Conference under Wahluke and Royal — for a loser-out game on a neutral pitch at Quincy High School Wednesday night.
Chelan (10-8) led most of the game, scoring the game’s only goal off the boot of Marin Ramirez in the 20th minute and defending that lead until Connell (13-7) found the equalizer in the 70th minute, 1-1.
After two scoreless five-minute overtimes, a nail-biting shootout ensued. Connell gained the advantage after netting the majority of penalty kicks, winning the game 2-1 and advancing to the next round of the state tournament.
Chelan’s impressive season showed much improvement, finishing third in the Caribou Trail League and making state. They will graduate six seniors. Those athletes are Isaac Martinez Valadez, Juan Angeles, Walter Hernandez, Nicolas Gonzalez, Isidro Villareal and Javier Barajas.
