TUMWATER — The Tumwater Valley Golf Club hosted the 2023 1B/2B state golf championships on Tuesday and Wednesday. Several NCW high school athletes qualified for the state tournament but only a couple made the cut after the first round.
Unlikely as it might seem, the highest finish for any local golfer came from Manson’s Wyatt Winters.
What made it unlikely was the simple fact that Winters hasn’t spent a single day in high school — he’s an 8th-grader. All season long he has been playing with the Chelan High School team, competing with 1A schools and it has only served him well.
He scored 82 in Round 1 and 75 in Round 2 which tied him for second with two other golfers.
Oroville’s Will Moreau also made the cut and placed 21st after scoring 88 in Round 1 and 86 in Round 2. Kane Booker (Oroville) shot an 89, Terek Bush (Lake Roosevelt) scored a 93 and Darton Wood (Okanogan) shot a 100 in the first round but didn’t make the cut for Round 2.
For the girls, Amelia Moreau (Oroville) scored 116, Crystal Nemecio (Oroville) shot 125 and Alexa Garcia (Waterville-Mansfield) scored 132 in the first round but did not make the cut for Round 2 on Wednesday.
