Jean "Granny" Carlson, 80, a longtime resident of Leavenworth, WA, died Sunday morning, March 13, 2011, at her home. Jean was born on March 5, 1931, to Robert and Eva Nelson in Lady Smith, WI, where she received her early education. She moved to the Leavenworth area in 1958, where she raised seven daughters, Linda, Carol, Ellen, Patty, Bonnie, Bobbie and Dottie. Jean never missed a day of work; she was a pilot car driver for Wisconsin Forest Products, Pack River and also operated and owned an upholstery shop for over 25 years. Granny loved being surrounded by family during the traditional holiday celebrations, but she truly enjoyed spur of the moment barbecues and outings with her daughters and grandchildren. Whether it be setting off in a limo to a far off casino, or laughing for hours over lunch, she was always up for a good time. Our granny cared for all of us deeply. She was our umbrella and sheltered us from the storms of life as much as she could. Always willing to listen, offer her wisdom, and share a cup of coffee. Her house was where we laughed, loved, bickered, and feasted on family favorites. No matter the number of people eating, she was the last in line, always making sure everyone was taken care of. Her heart was fullest when her girls were content. She loved to spend her free time fiddling on the computer, out-smarting the slots at Mill Bay, and playing bingo on Friday nights with family and friends.
She is survived by her special friend, Bob Whittaker of East Wenatchee; her daughters, Linda (Don) Baird of East Wenatchee, Carol Prag of Wenatchee, Patty Marlin of East Wenatchee, Bonnie (Gary) Cusick of Worley, ID, Bobbie Faulconer (Mike McGills) of Leavenworth and Dottie Schlup (Byron Saliby) of Leavenworth; brothers, Jim (Dee) Nelson of Leavenworth and Arthur (Jodie) Nelson of Tennessee; 17 grandchildren, Bev, Donna, Matt, Karen, Lisa, Lora, Billy, Carl, Nathan, Brenden, Joey, Michael, Jennifer, Kari, Jeremy, Nicholas and Austin; and 21 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Eva; a loving daughter, Ellen Keating; son-in-law, Lloyd Marlin; and a sister-in-law, Pat Nelson.
A Graveside Service of Commemoration to Celebrate the Life of Jean "Granny" Carlson will be held on Friday, March 18, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. at the Mt. View Cemetery in Leavenworth. Ward's Funeral Chapel, Leavenworth, is in charge of the arrangements.
